oooh - brave of you to admit it - i always lie and say i don't smoke....................... i seen a trailer for 'house' once and he was telling someone with crohn's that it was probably smoking that saved them from getting worse but never have managed to see the full episode! |

I'm no doctor, but I'm sure that I read that smoking is bad for Crohn's, but good for ulcerative colitis, or rather ulcerative colitis is more common in non smokers than smokers. I used to smoke and gave it up a couple of years ago. It's impossible to say for sure, but I reckon that giving up has helped my crohn's symptoms for the better. |

Hi
I've recently given up after many years of so called trying. In fact, I just stopped as my consultant really scared me. He was very blunt, blaming smoking as the cause of my crohns but added that I was more likely to die from a crohns related condition due to smoking than I was of lung cancer. I'm not sure of the truth in it but it scared me into giving up. I can't actually believe that I have given up. Strange thing is that I no longer like coffee and I do know that coffee was an irritant and caused the runs.
I also read that smoking is bad for Crohn's, but nicotine is good for ulcerative colitis.
Good luck if you do decide to quit Lou |

Hi folks, have been told smoking actually helps crohns, something to do with nicotine, but gps arnt going to tell you to smoke are they? I smoke a pipe, and although on morphine do like a pint of real ale,or red wine.Iam not giving in to this illness and become a cabbage for the rest of my miserable life...
chin up folks......David

***WARNING** If you have Crohn's disease, stop smoking. Smoking can prevent remissions in Crohn's disease and make it more active. After Crohn's surgery, the illness recurs sooner, and often more severely in smokers than in non-smokers.
Please Crohn's sufferer's, don't be fooled. I used to be a smoker and quit in 1980, following my first bowel resection. The warning above is posted from the Crohn's Colitis Foundation, and deemed very accurate. If you continue to smoke, you will take away your better chances of remissions. Smoking also causes emphezema, asthma, lung cancer, cervical cancer, birth defects in children, heart disease and other stuff. There is absolutely no good to come from smoking.
I used to be afraid I'd gain weight if I quit. (imagine that, it was pre-crohn's days). I personally lost a child due to birth defects from smoking. In 1983 I was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer, caused by smoking.
My husband has severe asthma from smoking, he also has 5 stents and a triple bypass in his heart, from smoking.
My mother died from Emphezema (smoking), my aunt died from lung cancer (smoking).
Quiting is very hard to do, but we both did it 'cold turkey'. We put the smokes down and didn't pick them up. Please consider your own health, the health of your children (from second hand smoke). Think of the money you can save! Cigarettes have been proved to contain added carcenogins to keep us addicted. That in itself should be enough to make you mad enough to quit. Health care costs are astronomical because of smoking. Now there is proof that dipping snuff and chewing tobacco is just as horrible.
I'm not a former smoker on a band wagon, I just think you should take in consideration the risks.

I guess if you have seen the destruction that I have, it would make a better impression. My little auntie (lung cancer), didn't have children, and was totally addicted to smoking. She smoked until 7 days before she died of the cancer that took her prematurely.
I see it this way. My life has improved greatly since I quit. Did you know that your lungs improve within 24 hours of you having your last cigarette?
I understand the boredom, for sure. I took up Violin lessons @ age 50; 7 years later I learned the Viola; I read more now, I have started a Crohn's blog for my own personal sanity; there are many things out there that you might use to get you out of that boredom. Go for it.
The Doctors have said that my Osteoporsis is elevated by former smoking and Predisone. Now I'm trying to improve my quality of life by helping to reduce my bone loss. by taking bone builders, lots of calcium and exercise (walking).
Is there anything you can do to help your spinal stenosis?
Just chattin' with ya, again not preachin' a sermon.

And I should moan! Your condition sounds horrible, but I have found that bit of humor within your typing! That's the type of person I like, one that keeps on going, no matter what. Is the stenosis related to Crohn's or Colitis? I'll try to get in a little research on it.
Thank you dear for the cheery words. And keep on posting!

not sure about any link between them i was told i was far to active when younger ie; legs round back of neck the bending over and placing flat hands almost forearms on floor with legs straight my friends and i used to see how far i could push my joints more than them crazy but fun at time as now they are saying i pushed my self to far dislocating joints has damaged them thats why i have spinal arthritus & stenosis and others but hindsight is such a wonderful thing dont you think . lifes for living and giving, . i once went to dentist to have a molar removed and dislocated my disc in my jaw didn't even know i had one there mouth shut for 5 months lived on soup and noodles ( i had to suck on them but hated it when came to end as they slapped me in the face) and ended up with sauce all over my face not a pretty sight , worse thing was couldn't yawn oh how deprived was i lol. thanks cp you cheered me up |

Dang. I just had a molar pulled 4 weeks ago and I can't imagine (with horror) what that was like. I too, used to do the back bends, hands to the floor, etc. Was it our age group? Nah! My grandkids do the flips, turns, and bends now. It's a child/kid thing, I'm sure.
I laughed as we have hi-jacked your thread from smoking to personal stuff!
Back to your first post......your doctor has advised you correctly. You don't need another slap in the face do you? Ha ha ha ha

yeh your right so here goes i'm probably going to be a grumpy old git lol hey i can still do those things all be it a lot slower , doctors are amazed they rarely see my condition. so much so they didn't believe me about jaw and that i couldn't open it enough to even put little finger in, one even knocked me out under anasthetic he tried for nearly an hour using a fine crowbar ( he said it was a needle type thing but it felt afterwards more like a tyre iron) but ligament holding it had twanged back so he couldn't slip it back i was dumb struck honest ......really, spent a long time in physio but eventually it went back but am not allowed to see a regular dentist just in case................ so wish me luck no smoking here we go aaaaagh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

hope this helps - you should not smoke if you suffer from crohns as it can seriously aggrevate it, cause more problems such as liver problems, gall stones and increased risk of bowel cancer. It does NOT help crohns in any way. In colitis, it is said you are at a lower risk if you still smoke rather than if you are an ex smoker. |

You've been 6 days smoke free! Hip Hip Hoorah! Tomorrow will your first full week...how much $$ have you saved thus far? Smokes are quite expensive here. That's the reason most stores have them in a controlled area or under a lock and key. I've very proud of your success by the way! |
