Hi all, just asking if anybody has ever had a bad night with acid indigestion/ heartburn, whilst on the steroids. not sure f its a side affect or not, ive looked at the paperwork cant see anything, but when the dr gave mr the steroids she gave me a course of omeprazole, but i cant take them because they cause me to have the runs, and has if i need them, like i dont have them enough lol. it started about 11pm i decided i was getting sleepy so took my self off to bed, whilst sitting up i got this pain in my upper abdo which then run into my chin and what felt like it was in my ears aswell, i had this horrible taste in mouth and this constant burning in my upper abdo. i was on fire, i took 4 lots of gaviscon which didnt really do anything, after about 2 hours i was ready to get my head down although not fully gone so i went to sleep sat up with my v pillow. the last time i saw was 1.40am, and then woke up at 6.00am with a bad tummy, im now on my third visit to the toilet with bad pains in my upper abdo again,  not much happening although the pain is still there, XXXSUEXXX

hi tatty...i really can sympathise with the heartburn....i have suffered with it for about 13 years now...i have been on some major meds over the last 13 years and am now at the stage where my stomach lining wont tolerate my meds anymore...so i really do know what you are going through...gaviscon is really not strong enough but i find the lansoprazole does help a bit...the best trick is to learn to sleep sitting up...lol...i know it sounds stupid but the more upright you are the less the acid can rise up....i do wish you the very best of luck in finding a solution hun...

i usually find that it can take a couple of hours to kick in......but i also find sucking something like a boiled sweet helps...not sure why think its just the sucking that helps....but it only helps when ur sucking....also eat very small amounts.....because of crohns i find bowel moves much slower and the more food in your stomach the more heartburn....good luck hun

Hey Sue.  I'm a steriod user (33 yrs).  You might take precaution and only take Prednisone with food.  The Omeprezole should, in fact, help your stomach acid production. It actually helps the diarrhea because it slows tummy acid.

Here's what I have done for several years.

Try to eat a little something a few times a day.  Crackers, chips, etc.  That gives tummy acid something to gnaw on.  You very well may have the beginnings of a stomach ulcer, and crackers may help.     Try to refrain from any acid foods for a while.  Don't add to your misery.  No tomatoes, coffee, sodas, vinegars, fruit juices, etc.  If you add extra acidic food, you're defeating the purpose of the meds.
Don't eat prior to bedtime.  I try to shut all food down by 6:30 p.m.  I go to bed later in the evening (11:30p.m) so that gives my stomach time to empty.  As advised, try to elevate your pillow in the night.  And drink lots of water.

My gut is weird.  I'm able to control my diarrhea with calcium carbonate.  It is good to absorb extra bowel fluid (water and acids), then add in my Omeprazole and that reduces more stomach acids.   Then finally I take 1 dose of Cholestyramine prior to bed to also reduce more bile acids during the night.  The combination of the 3 keep my in good form.  I may have soft stool only 3 times a day and that's very managable.

Hope you get better soon.

Hey Sue,you want to try sleeping with morphine.I have had 2 nights this week, waking up
with joint pain, having panic attacks in the dark, sleeping with the lamp on,in a cold sweat.
Things just dont get any better, awake most of the night, dry in the mouth, nausiating, then
at 8.00am when it gets light, deep sleep until 11.30am,dreadful.

Used to look foreward for bed,but now dread the dark.

Keep smiling.......David.

Hey there Sue.  You guys need to remember that I'm half way around the world and I'm up during your early morning hours if you need anyone to talk to.  You guys make me hurt.  Poor thing, wish I could help.  Guess I'll just have to listen.

I have acid reflux and heartburn anyway as a migraine side effect but it's got much worse since the prednisolone.  Getting burning from my stomach up, particularly bad this morning in my throat.  It's very uncomfortable and I also found that Gaviscon and the like hardly touch it.

Doc has prescribed me ranitidine (Zantac) to take twice a day.  Am trying it that way at the mo but might go back to just taking it when I need it.

We are aware of acid reflux situations. Stomach acid pushes up into the esophogas and creates pain.  You need to be aware of a bowel reflux, where the bile acid backs up, into your stomach.  This causes extreme pain.  All issues with acid indigestion problems should be brought to the attention of your physician or proper testing, then treated accordingly.    Sometimes the latter issue causes extreme belching along with the pain.
It sure is aggravating, besides being pretty painful, huh?
