For the past week or so I have been suffering with restless legs in the eveing and in bed at night to the point where I can't sleep.  Is this something to do with the meds (Pred since Nov and Metho since Jan) or just another condition to add to the list?  Anyone have any ideas on this and how to stop it, I'm desperate for sleep !!

Hi Linney, yes its part of the condition. When i was diagnosed back in 2004 i was a
treefeller, and couldnt  feel my fingers, feet. They did tests and found my nerves in my
hands, feet had perished. This with the crohns gave me the ability to kick out at night
making it impossible to sleep with  my partner, cofining me to the spare bedroom.

I have nights that no matter what, wrestle, kick, even punch walls to feel the pain.
I always sleep during the day better than nightime,i even now dont look foreward
to bed,lol. I have pinched the skin,hit things,squeeze my hands,slap my feet,just to
get some sort of feeling.
Its not a good condition, and if you have a busy day, sport,or long walks,it seems to
catch up with you 2 days later,i dont know why?.
A tepid bath,or milky drink does help, especially lavender in the bath.

Hope this helps, i know what your going through.

regards David

Thanks David, sometimes when another symptom hits you think you are going nuts.  I have done some research and lack of iron, magnesium and or B12 can also be a factor.  Blood test soon so maybe that will show something.  It is so annoying to have something else to put up with !

I had awful restless legs during my pregnancy (luckily it stopped after giving birth). The thing I found most helpful was to get out of bed, go and run my feet/legs under a cold shower and just towel them off a bit so I went back to bed with them still damp, which kept them cool. No idea why this worked but it did give me some relief and some sleep!

You have my sympathies...restless legs at night is an awful symptom.

Hi there Linney,
My heart goes out to you....
I looked into this a great deal when my Auntie asked me for help with it. She was absolutely tormented by it - couldn't sit down comfortably during the day - having to get up and move around and at night it kept her awake. I discovered that there seem to be as many variations of the condition as sufferers and there is a lot of disagreement about the diagnosis. We explored which situations made the condition  better and worse (I am well used to analysing symptoms and matching them with conditions and combinations of situations in my work with clients' conditions): The conclusions we drew  with her condition were:
1. The symptoms worsen with tiredness - which makes it doubly annoying since the condition itself causes insomnia.
2. Worry makes it worse.
3. Waiting, and other "imposed inactivity" makes it worse.
4. Engrossment in something enjoyable takes it away or alleviates it depending on the degree of absorption.
5. Relaxation makes it better.
6. Hypnosis works best of all the things we tried. (I am an NLP Master Practitioner and Hypnotherapist). This might sound rather insane - but the brain plays some really cute tricks - our interpretation of the uncontrollable and irratic movement was that the movement was the brain's hyperactivity owing to the medication that she was taking: her mind was trying to accomplish things and solve problems and wouldn't let her body rest. I don't know whether you can identify with that? In her case the approach was to persuade her that she deserved a rest and had a duty to rest in order to do justice to tomorrow's tasks. That way we were turning the relaxation into an active task that fully absorbed her unconscious mind and so allowed her to switch off the need to do other things. Well it worked for her - but like I said - everyone is different. We did most of this work over the phone as we lived over 200 miles apart, and that seemed just as effective as in person. It was rather challenging as initially, the condition prevented her from relaxing sufficiently to be receptive to the process, but once she was talked into relaxing, she was very receptive and the relief was very effective.
Hope this helps.
My www.painsinthebutt.com blog might have some other posts that are of value you to you over time. It's embryonic at present. Given that this seems to be a general problem I'll post this info on the blog in the hope that it might help other restless legs. Thank you for giving me the idea for posting this as a resource. Would you mind if I posted your question as well? In the meantime I'll just post my reply.
