Hi everyone, I'm owndering if anyone can offer me some advice.
I was discharged from hospital on Thurs after a small bowel resection the previous Friday. I've had awful diahorrea during the night ever since the op. The surgeons have been very dissmissive and jsut say 'it will pass' but I have been up literally all night passing gallons of watery diahorrea.

So, I gave in and took some immodium last night just to get some sleep. It worked, but now I feel totally bunged up!

Does anyone have any advice on how to tackle this? Should I just drink plenty and hope I eventually manage to go?

Hi Cassie,
I wouldn`t take anything else until you`ve been to the toilet.
I would wait until your system settles down, I know it will be very frustrating, wanting to go and doing nothing when you get there, but be patient it will get better.
Let me know how you get on.
Delilah.

HI Cassie

I had a similar op a few years ago,the op was fine but it took a good 2 weeks before I could go normally, I had the bout of diarrhoea and then took imodium to stop it all, they gave me everything possible to make it stop, make it go, and regulate it,  but its catch 22, you've probably been nil by mouth pre op, so nothing to pass properly, so Im with Delilah on this, give it a few days to settle, lots water to flush you through, start introducing foods little and often, not too bulky, but enough to make your bowel start working and spasming as it should, it'l be uncomfortable at first, but it will get easier.

Hope you fell better soon, let us know

Hi Cassie

I also had a bowel resection (last November), I was on the loo almost constantly for about one month after the op.  I actually went to the doctor as the only way I could explain it was like vomiting from my bottom, much worse than I'd ever had before, with no control.  I was put on loperamide and sachets of something like concrete, which didn't work and made me sick (can't remember the name, sorry).  It did ease a bit after about a month but only for a couple of weeks, then back to 25+ a day and through the night.  It got so bad, I had to have another colonoscopy and turned out the crohns was back again and that was the cause, however my surgeon said I would always have it as I now have 'short bowel syndrome' due to the amount taken away.  Keep an eye on it, hopefully it will clear up but suggest you contact your consultant if it doesn't.  Best of luck, Lou

Thanks for the replies. The Immodium finally wore off last night, but oooh it was agony when it did! Touch wood the diahorrea hasn't been quite so bad today. I spoke to my ibd nurse yesterday and she's going to bring forward my consultant appt because I have so many post-op symptoms. Fingers crossed its just taking a bit more time to recover than usual.
